Why Does My Baby Want to Nurse All the Time?

It feels like my baby wants to nurse all day and night. Is this normal?
Yes—this is very common! Let’s talk about why.

Babies Nurse Often

New babies have small tummies. Human milk is easy to digest, so they get hungry often. Some babies nurse every 1 to 3 hours. This is normal and healthy.

Nursing is not just for food. Babies also nurse for:

  • Comfort

  • Sleep

  • Feeling close to their parent or caregiver

All of this is part of how they grow and feel safe.

What Is Cluster Feeding?

Sometimes babies nurse a lot in a short time. This is called cluster feeding. It often happens:

  • In the evening

  • During growth spurts

  • When babies are fussy or tired

Cluster feeding helps your body make more milk. It also helps your baby feel calm and connected.

Is My Baby Getting Enough Milk?

This is a common worry. Here are signs your baby is getting enough:

  • 6 or more wet diapers each day

  • Gaining weight

  • Seems calm after nursing

If you see these signs, your baby is likely getting what they need.

What You Can Do

  • Follow your baby’s cues. Let them nurse when they want to.

  • Rest when you can. Feeding often can be tiring. You’re doing important work.

  • Ask for support. La Leche League Leaders, lactation consultants, and healthcare providers can help.

You’re Not Alone

Many parents and caregivers wonder if frequent nursing means something is wrong. In most cases, it’s a sign that your baby is growing, learning, and bonding with you.

Your baby knows what they need. And your body knows how to respond.
You’re doing great.
